The main purpose for finding a serial number on your Fender Stratocaster is to discover its production details. A serial number allows only an approximation of the production year because it corresponds only to the date that the piece was constructed, not to when the entire guitar was put together. Note that there is a serious amount of overlap on many serial numbers. Typically there is a one-year overlap between serial codes because of the changeover to new numbers in the factories each year. Look on the headstock of the guitar to find the serial number for a Fender Stratocaster. It may be located on the front or the back. The serial number is typically a numeral preceded by one or two letters. During the first 14 years of Stratocaster production, the serial numbers were only numerals; from on, the numerals were preceded by a combination of one or two letters. Serial numbers corresponding to , mean the guitar was created during the first five production years of Fender Stratocasters: through L10,L20, corresponds to

Since being purchased by CBS in , Fender had radically modified the Stratocaster and Telecaster models on which its existence was essentially based. Numerous spin-off models of the Tele were created, though, some of which had the infamous three-bolt neck attachment.
With its Ash body and TL pickups, this Telecaster provides sharp and edgy tone using simple controls. The more accurate body radius is shown off using multiple.
The idea came to pass when Fenders higher priced USA guitars could no longer compete with the cheaper instruments being produced in Japan. Fenders construction methods are clever, really clever. Well imagine it like this: A Gibson Les Paul as an example has a complicated set neck which requires both a master craftsman to assemble and precious man hours to spare, whereas a Fender is assembled by utilizing a bolt-on design.
Basically if a guitar body is correctly cut and a neck is correctly made, a numskull can bolt the two together and produce the same results that Fender otherwise would have. There are so many universal Fender parts pickups, necks, bodies, electronics etc that there are simply thousands of combinations to be achieved. The parts are usually selected USA parts, imported into Japan and thrown together in new exciting combinations.
Japan have a worldwide reputation for product quality and reliability, from cars to electronics to instruments. In short these instruments are bloody fantastic, properly put together, unique and sometimes incredibly sought after. If you see one you fancy, then snatch it up!

Squier is a musical instrument brand name owned by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Fender, under the ownership of CBS , acquired the Squier brand name in when it bought a USA based string making firm, but it lay dormant for many years . Before the Fender Squier series were introduced in , Fender was making lower priced guitars such as the Fender Lead series at their Fullerton California plant. Until the introduction of the Fender Squier series, Fender had never produced lower priced guitars based on their main Stratocaster and Telecaster designs and had always used different model designs for their lower priced guitars.
In the late s and early s Fender was facing competition from lower priced Japanese made guitars. The lower priced Fender guitars were made in America and could not compete with the lower prices of Japanese made Fender copies. In the early s, Japanese labor and production costs were much lower than in America and to compete with the Japanese made guitars, Fender moved the lower priced Fender guitar production from America to Japan.
Fender began negotiations with several Japanese musical instrument distributors and reached an agreement with Yamano Gakki and Kanda Shokai to establish Fender Japan. Yamano Gakki are also known for once being part of Epiphone Japan. Kanda Shokai own the Greco brand name and one of the conditions of the Fender Japan agreement was that Kanda Shokai cease production of its own Greco Fender copies. This arrangement benefited Fender because it removed the Greco Fender copies from the Japanese market which were selling in Japan at much lower prices than the American made Fenders and it also benefited Kanda Shokai because Kanda Shokai could then distribute Japanese made Fender branded guitars in Japan.
